The November issue of the prestigious Art Newspaper, International Edition, featured a review on two of Al Mohtaraf books: ‘Young Saudi Lenses’ and ‘Saudi Artists Today’, describing them as going ‘a long way towards expanding our visual understanding of Saudi Arabia today.’
The review, written by Henry Hemming, stresses that the effort put into ‘Young Saudi Lenses’ could not have been possible just ten years ago, as the book features young photographers, female as well as male, and moves away from conventional topics typically associated with the Saudi scene. On the other book, Hemming recounts how ‘Saudi Artists Today’ was initially called ‘Saudi Painters Today’, and how the naming shift is indicative of one happening at large in the Saudi arts scene, whereby ‘art’ is becoming increasingly free from ‘painting’ as a medium.
